Techniques

Here at Captanis Chiropractic, our chiropractors are trained in several different techniques in order to tailor to the need of each individual patient.

A chiropractor's technique may be the result of many factors: where he or she went to school, their physical stature, and the physical structure of the person being adjusted.

A 3 week old baby is adjusted differently than a 30 year old, and both are adjusted differently than a 90 year old.

Applied Kinesiology:

Applied Kinesiology can be used to diagnose and treat nervous system problems, nutritional deficiencies or excesses, imbalances in the body's "energy pathways" (known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as meridians), and many other health concerns. Applied kinesiology (AK) which is also know as muscle strength testing, is a method of diagnosis and treatment based on the belief that various muscles are linked to particular organs and glands, and that specific muscle weakness can signal distant internal problems such as nerve damage, reduced blood supply, chemical imbalances or other organ or gland problems. Practitioners contend that by correcting this muscle weakness, you can help heal a problem in the associated internal organ.

Diversified:

This is a widely used type of chiropractic manipulation/adjustment that includes most of the procedures taught in chiropractic institutions. This technique is the most commonly used of all chiropractic techniques and is the one probably most familiar to patients. The Diversified manipulation/adjustment entails a high velocity, low-amplitude thrust delivered by hand and possibly with assistance from a table or block. This usually results in a cavitation of a joint (quick, shallow thrusts that cause the popping noise often associated with a chiropractic manipulation/adjustment). As the name implies, the Diversified Technique can be used to treat many of the joints in the body.

Activator:

A spring-loaded, hand-held mechanical instrument called the Activator Adjusting Instrument provides a quick, low-force impulse at specific points. The Activator Method uses a small, hand-held instrument called the Activator Adjusting Instrument to deliver a gentle impulse force to the spine with the goal of restoring motion to the targeted spinal vertebra or joint.
It is an alternative to the traditional manual form of spinal manipulation, known as the high velocity low amplitude (HVLA) thrust.

Neuro-Emotional-Technique (NET):

A mind-body technique that uses a methodology of finding and removing neurological imbalances related to the physiology of unresolved stress. NET is a tool that can help improve many behavioral and physical conditions.

Sports Chiropractic:

The focus of chiropractic sports specialists is to provide care in the conservative management, rehabilitation and performance optimization of neuromusculoskeletal system for athletic populations and to participate in a multi-disciplinary sports injury care environment.

Kinesiology Taping:

When your muscle or joint is overused or injured, that area becomes inflamed or swollen. This swelling is composed of blood (internal bleeding from the injury) and other fluids. The excess fluid should be removed by the lymphatic vessels in the area, but if the inflammation is great enough, the lymphatic vessels get compressed and can’t fully do their job. This can lead to an ongoing cycle of inflammation and pain, which can limit performance and slows the healing process.

Unlike standard athletic taping, which often involves wrapping a joint for support and compression, kinesiology tape is placed in a variety of patterns depending on the injury. It is pulled to differing degrees of tension to create the desired effect and is typically worn for two to five days, unlike standard tape, which is used mainly during an activity. Tape can be applied along the length of a tired muscle for support. "It allows the muscles to go on vacation for a day or two so they come back healed."

Cold-Laser Therapy:

Cold laser therapy also known as "soft laser therapy" is a medical treatment form, which uses low level lasers to stimulate the damaged tissues, thereby enhancing the progress of healing and providing relief from pain and inflammation. The cold laser treatment has a very good potential to ease chronic pain and inflammation due to its capability to penetrate the skin and treat soft tissue injuries.

The relief and healing provided by the cold laser is due to the several mechanisms, which the therapy induces. There is increased production of the serotonin in the brain and the stimulation of the neuro-endocrine system, which promotes the sense of overall well-being. In addition, the progress of tissue repair is enhanced and pain is alleviated. When the targeted body part is exposed to the cold laser, the cells are exposed to photon energy, which increases metabolism of the cells and promotes collagen growth and muscle cells. The blood circulation improves and thus the wounds heal faster.

The cold laser treatment is highly beneficial for those, who suffer from acute or chronic pain. As compared to the other treatment methods, the cold laser provides certain benefits like:
  1. 1. Being safe
  2. 2. Non-invasive
  3. 3. Non-toxic
  4. 4. Cost effective
  5. 5. Alternative form of treatment
  6. 6. The need for surgery is reduced
The cold laser therapy is gaining new successful levels of treatment because it induces increased blood circulation to the injured area, thereby activating natural healing and treatment. For this reason, it is not only very helpful in relieving chronic back pain but also in the treatment of:
  • Arthritis
  • Burns
  • Swelling
  • Sports injuries
  • Ligament injury
  • Muscle strain
  • Hair growth
  • Weight loss, to an extent
  • Regeneration of the nerves
  • Joint injuries and pains
  • Wound healing

Ear Coning:

Ear candling requires the use of ear candles. Ear candles are made of cotton or linen that's wound into a cone shape, soaked in wax, and then allowed to harden.

This hollow candle is inserted through a hole in a plate specially designed to collect wax, and placed into the external ear canal. The candle is lit at the opposite end.

Proponents of ear candling claim that this creates a low-level vacuum that draws ear wax and other debris out of the ear and into the hollow candle. After the procedure, a dark, waxy substance is usually left in the stub of the candle.

Many people find it to be a satisfying procedure, because they are told that the dark waxy mass they see is a combination of ear wax and debris.

Proponents of ear candling claim that it can help to remove ear wax and debris from the ear and facial sinuses. The external ear canal, however, is not continuous with the middle ear, sinuses, Eustachian tube, and nasal passages when the ear drum (tympanic membrane) is normal and intact.

Foot Levelers Orthotics:

Why Foot Levelers?

Would you wear eyeglasses that weren’t prescribed for you? Or take an over-the-counter drug for a problem that requires a prescription drug?

Of course not — you take care of your health and do what is right for your overall well-being.

Most orthotic companies only support one arch. When only one arch is being supported the problem shifts to another part of your body. Stabilizing Orthotics support the three interconnected arches of your foot, the plantar vault. The structural support for the entire body’s equilibrium is gained from your feet’s plantar vault.
